Lorene Payne Rogers, age 92, of Little Rock, school teacher and mother, friend of many, made her transition to her heavenly home Saturday, August 14, 2010. She was born September 24, 1917 to the late Lonas & Irene Payne in Pikeville, Tennessee.
She is survived by four children: Howard (Judy) Martin of Cabot, Diane Bryant of Fayetteville, Al Martin of Mt. Ida, and Carolyn Croom of No. Little Rock; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Lorene was raised in Tennessee where she was Miss McNairy County and Miss Cotton Queen, and in the Miss Tennessee pageant twice. She graduated from Arkansas Tech in 1938 and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1971; the same year that her daughter Diane graduated and her son Howard graduated from Law School. She was also head of the children's department of the No. Little Rock Library. From 1971-1983 she taught second grade at Harris Elementary in Pulaski County. She was an active member of the Pulaski Heights Baptist Church where she assisted with vacation bible school in her 80's. She was a long time volunteer at the Salvation Army and is included in Who's Who of American Educators.
She was a loving, caring, spontaneous and fun mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to Gideons International or the Arkansas School for the Deaf. Funeral Services will be at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Cabot on the 16th of August at 9:30 am.
